Over the years, State Farm focused on a variety of issues, such as:

Air Bags

In a 1983 landmark ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in favor of State Farm to restore federal rules requiring the installation of passive restraints, such as air bags, in all passenger vehicles. Since this decision, air bags have saved thousands of lives.

Automated Vehicles

State Farm supports vehicle technologies that enhance safety, working closely with industry experts, academics, and state and federal agencies to understand and test automated vehicles. State Farm is often asked to share research and insights. State Farm provided congressional testimony on the impact of automated vehicles on insurance.

Building Code Standards

State Farm leads the effort to include home fire sprinklers in all new houses through national partnerships with groups such as the National Fire Protection Association and the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition.

Child Passenger Safety

In 2005, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and State Farm received the National Heroes Award for Outstanding Research Project for their pioneering research and impact on children’s safety in motor vehicles. The award recognized a unique academic-corporate research partnership that provided essential data and expertise to support the enactment of two federal and 32 state laws on safety standards and restraint-use requirements for child passengers.

Distracted Driving

State Farm works with organizations such as Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety to reduce distraction-related crashes through stronger state laws.

Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL)

State Farm conducted teen driver safety research and developed recommendations for minimum GDL provisions, including the creation of a GDL Toolkit, used to pass legislation. State Farm and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia championed a Congressional resolution that designated the third week in October as National Teen Driver Safety Week.

Impaired Driving

State Farm worked with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) to enact effective laws to stop drunk and drugged driving.
