1959

State Farm becomes a founding member of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS, a non-profit, independent, scientific, and educational organization, researches ways to reduce the incidence of and the damage caused by motor vehicle crashes. It also informs the public. IIHS conducts vast amounts of research leading to auto safety enhancements in engineering (how cars are built and safety devices operate), enforcement (laws and policies), and education (making drivers aware of issues).

1998

State Farm is a founding member of the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS). The IBHS is an independent, non-profit, scientific research, and communications organization supported solely by property insurers and reinsurers. Its building safety research leads to real-world solutions for home and business owners, creating more resilient communities.

2010

State Farm helps fund and launch the IBHS Research Center. The IBHS Research Center is a state-of-the-art research facility located on a 90-acre parcel of land in Chester County, South Carolina. This unique facility enables researchers to more fully and accurately evaluate residential and commercial construction materials and systems under realistic re-creations of severe weather hazards.

2015

State Farm helps fund and launch an expansion of the Vehicle Research Center. The $30 million expanded testing facility enables the IIHS to evaluate the latest crash avoidance technologies year-round. The centerpiece is a 5-acre covered track, one of the largest fabric-covered structures in the United States. An existing outdoor track is expanded to bring the total area of the track, including the covered section, to 15 acres. A new office and conference space is also part of the project.
